Tony Greig, the former England captain and well-known television commentator, has died after being diagnosed with lung cancer earlier this year. He suffered a heart attack at his home in Sydney on Saturday morning and died at about 1.45pm (AEDT). He was 66.

“He was rushed into St. Vincent’s hospital. The staff of the emergency department worked on Mr Greig to no avail,” St Vincent’s spokesman David Faktor told Sydney Morning Herald.

Greig had been initially diagnosed with bronchitis in May but his condition did not improve and tests following the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka revealed that he had a lesion on his right lung. On his return to Australia from the tournament, he had “a lot of fluid” drained from the lung, and further testing revealed he had cancer. An integral part of Channel Nine’s commentary team, Greig was not on duty at any of the Tests during the Australian summer.

“It’s not good. The truth is I’ve got lung cancer. Now it’s a case of what they can do,” Greig had said while speaking on air to Channel Nine during the Australia-South Africa Test series in November. He was operated on later that month.

Born in Queenstown, South Africa, son of a Scottish father, Greig trialled for Sussex in 1965 as a teenager and prospered, then set himself the goal of representing England. Considered good enough to represent Rest of the World in Australia in 1971-72, he earned a Test cap for the subsequent home Ashes series, making half-centuries in each innings of his debut and taking five wickets.

He played 58 Tests for England, and led them in 14, during a five-year career that ended in 1977, when Greig joined Kerry Packer and was one of the key players in organising World Series Cricket. He was captain of the World XI side during the competition that spanned two years. Greig scored 3599 Test runs at an average of 40 and took 141 wickets at 32 apiece.

A Channel Nine statement said: “Tony Greig is a name synonymous with Australian cricket – from his playing days as the English captain we loved to hate, to his senior role in the revolution of World Series Cricket, his infamous car keys in the pitch reports and more than three decades of colourful and expert commentary.”

BENAZIR Bhutto, the twice-elected prime minister and chairperson of the PPP, was assassinated this day five years ago.

Her life was cut short at a time when people needed her guidance most. She had arrived after eight years of self-exile. On arrival at Karachi airport, she said: “I feel very emotional coming back to my country. I have dreamt of this day for so many months and years. I counted the hours; I counted the minutes and seconds just to see my land, to see the grass and to see the sky.”

But those who wanted to perpetuate national slavery and backwardness assassinated her. Here are some words from her last speech: “I put my life in danger and came here because I feel that my country is in danger. I want to see a prosperous, progressive and developed Pakistan.”

Among her many achievements are the missile technology for the country, Agosta submarine for the Navy, women`s banks and women`s police stations.

Also, women`s affairs ministry was formed during her first tenure in 1988.

She appointed women judges, as well as thousands of lady health visitors to minimize infant mortality, started a campaign to make the country polio-free.

She was larger than life and leaves behind a legacy of resistance, courage and hope. She struggled for the right of the people of the all provinces of Pakistan.

She told the Afghan president hours before her assassination on Dec 27 that “life and death are in the hands of Almighty Allah”, and that she was not afraid of death. She boldly took the initiative against extremism and terrorism. She always emphasised the need to to uphold Pakistani flag in Swat and Waziristan.

Terrorism is a big threat to peace in the world. It breeds when extremism gets sponsorship; a similar kind of situation commonly prevails in Pakistan. Terrorism is a heinous crime and should be universally denounced.

History will always remember her for standing up against dictators. She was the voice of the downtrodden and the oppressed.

She believed in forgiving and forgetting, far from the politics of seeking any revenge. Tolerance was the hallmark of her political, moral and religious ethos.

Benazir Bhutto was a great mother, a wife, a leader, a daughter, a sister who sacrificed her life for the cause of democracy so that her children and the children of the country and future generations and all of us can breathe in fresh air of democratic life.

The demand for iPhone5 might be slowing but that has not stopped its main rival, Samsung from releasing yet another smartphone.

This one seems all about price point and capturing the ‘budget’ market – those that want the feel and look of say an iPhone 5 or an S3, but cannot afford the price.

Samsung has launched its latest smart phone, a budget version of its popular smartphone and called it the Galaxy Grand.

While both, the S3 and the iPhone 5 retail at upwards of Dh2,200, the Galaxy Grand is more than likely to be available for at least Dh750 cheaper.

While Apple strictly adheres to one upgrade every year, Samsung has been launching various variants of its popular models to suit the needs and requirements of its consumers.

The dual SIM Samsung Galaxy Grand runs Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean) and is powered by a 1.2 GHz Dual Core processor.

The phone has an 8 megapixel camera and a 2 megapixel front camera. The 5-inch WVGA (800×480) screen is of the TFT LCD variety.

“The device supports seamless multitasking, faster web browsing, lightning-fast screen transitions and superior graphics for some of the most demanding apps and games. The Galaxy Grand sports a powerful camera with zero shutter-lag and ultra-quick camera start-up. It includes a backside illumination sensor to ensure clear shots even in dark conditions, as well as Full HD video recording,” Samsung said in a statement.

The Galaxy Grand will be available in two versions – The Dual SIM version (GT-I9082) will launch first and the single SIM version (GT-I9080) will follow.

With the dual SIM version Samsung says it will be possible to receive calls on one SIM number while taking a call from the other, without missing the call.

Meanwhile it is being reported that Samsung is working towards an early 2013 release of its Galaxy S4.

In a teaser video released for CES 2013 to be held at Las Vegas Samsung is promising “something new” and it was widely expected to be the next generation Android phone the Galaxy S4.

However Samsung denied the rumor. Reports now indicate that the announcement of the new phone that boasts features such as bendable and unbreakable screen, 13 mega pixel camera could be made at the Samsung Forum event, taking place in Monaco from 4-6 February.
RECORDER REPORT

ISLAMABAD: Chairman Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Ali Arshad Hakim on Wednesday informed the Senate Standing Committee that the overall percentage of taxpayers’ vis-à-vis total population has gone down in Pakistan, as only 0.3 percent of the population is paying taxes.

Chairman FBR informed the Committee here on Wednesday that as per percentage of population in the country only 0.3 percent is paying tax. On the other hand, 4.7 percent of the total population is paying taxes in India. The FBR is taking a number of steps to increase the number of taxpayers and bring un-documented persons within the formal tax regime.

FBR Chairman also presented a CD to the committee, according to him the journalist who compiled and released the report on tax payments by parliamentarians has said in his interview that he obtained the data from Election Commission of Pakistan. The CD is about the video interview of the said journalist, he added.

FBR Chairman said that the Board has not shared data with any of the state institution including Election Commission of Pakistan or Nadra. Chairman FBR informed the committee that Income Tax Ordinance do not permit FBR to make public tax details of the parliamentarians.

Kamil Ali Agha of Pakistan Muslim League (Q) said that Election Commission does not maintain information about the tax returns declared with the FBR. Parliamentarians do not submit the tax related data to the Election Commission. The Election Commission never asked for the tax related information from the parliamentarians as the same is not required by the commission.

Nobody can imagine that the tax related information could be retrieved from the Election Commission. Senator Ishaq Dar of Pakistan Muslim League (N) suggested that the statement of assets and liabilities submitted to the Election Commission should be modified for collecting tax payments related information of the Parliamentarians. A new column, “tax paid as on June 30” should be added to the annual statement of assets and liabilities.

HYDERABAD, Dec 19: Several thousand government employees, volunteers and lady health workers on Wednesday took part in widespread rallies and demonstrations held in almost all cities and towns of Sindh in protest against armed attacks on members of anti-polio campaign teams in different parts of the country over the past two days.

They condemned the attacks on the people engaged in a campaign for a noble cause and demanded immediate measures by the government to ensure their safety and security.

In Hyderabad, representatives of the All Pakistan Lady Health Workers Employees Association (APLHWEA) and Vaccination Welfare Association announced immediate halt to the three-day vaccination campaign on Wednesday, one day before its scheduled completion.

Rukhsana Mughal and Shahid Yousufzai, heads of the two organisations, respectively, made the announcement at a press conference at the local press club.

They demanded arrest of the attackers and a Rs2 million compensation for each deceased victim.

They also called for the arrest of a religious party activist who, they claimed, threatened a lady health worker on Tuesday with dire consequences if she tried to enter his home for administering polio drops to his children. A complained had already been made to the Hyderabad commissioner in this regard, they said.

There is now a slew of nations that are engaged in democratic processes, courtesy of the ‘Arab awakening’ of the last two years. Democracy on ‘fast forward’ is untidy and never painless. The constitutional referendum vote in Egypt, part one of a consultative process which took place last Saturday, is a case in point. The Muslim Brotherhood is claiming victory in the vote on the new constitution with a 56 percent approval rating compared to 46 percent who voted against. The turnout was low at around 33 percent and there will be no final outcome until the 17 remaining governorates cast their votes next Saturday. There was no clear win for either side in Cairo and there may well be no clear winner even after the polls are over.

Despite this, the poll seems likely to have strengthened President Morsi who has a mandate of only 51 percent. The deeply polarised country has seen continuous protests against the new constitution, with nine people dying in such protests last week. The opposition – fragmented and without a proper leader – is claiming that there was massive vote-rigging and that in reality 66 percent of voters were against the new constitution. The National Salvation Front (NSF) claimed to have detected 750 violations of the electoral codes and practices, including unstamped ballot papers and votes cast by people who are no longer alive. There is no way these claims can be verified. If the constitution is passed it will pave the way for new elections next year. The first post-Mubarak parliament was dissolved and was dominated by the Brotherhood and Salafists. At the time it was elected, the opposition was so fragmentary as to be unable to effectively contest, but there are now some signs of unity and leadership, and the next parliament is likely to have a more representative mix of elected members. However, the electorate – whatever their political affiliations – are worried. The economy is in dire straits, the Egyptian pound is weak against the dollar and there is an ever-widening budget deficit. President Morsi is himself something of a work in progress, and Egypt’s newborn democracy is proving to be something of a problem child.
